Portsmouth RNLI launch to kayaker in difficulty
Portsmouth RNLI's Atlantic 85 Lifeboat, Norma T, was launched shortly after 3pm today (Tuesday 6th November) to a report of a lone kayaker struggling to paddle back to shore. The pair of kayakers had been out for a couple of hours and when trying to return to shore one of the gentlemen began to struggle, battling against the fast outgoing tide and with a south easterly wind blowing, it created an unpleasant choppy sea state. growing ever exhausted, they made the decision that one would paddle ahead and raise the alarm. Leaving his buddy a mile offshore, near the Langstone Harbour fairway post, he was able to reach Hayling beach and call 999 for the UK Coastguard. Realising the urgency of the situation the Atlantic 85 Lifeboat launched with only 3 crew, they rushed to the last known position but with nothing to be seen Helmsman Neil Maxwell used his local knowledge to follow the likely drift direction whilst others updated the UK Coastguard and searched all directions. Spotting the solo kayaker in the distance, trainee crew member Jordan alerted the team and speed was increased to confirm the sighting and rescue the kayaker, who by now had drifted over a mile further out to sea. Once alongside the cramped, near hypothermic gentleman was brought onboard, warmed and returned to the Boathouse and a waiting ambulance. Paramedics confirmed that further treatment was needed so he was taken to hospital for additional assessment.
